Light fixture with one wire? Help!!

So I've wired a decent amount of switches and fixtures but I'm no expert...so I'm replacing a fixture in a house built in 1987. It has two switches, one being a dimmer, and the fixture. When I took it down it has a group of white wires capped, two whites with a black capped, and both the neutral and hot from the old fixture were tied to the black (hot) from the box. Does this make sense? Do I wire the replacement fixture the same way??? So only one black wire was tied to the fixture Thanks...
