Hardieplank on Gable End

I am about to start Hardie siding on a gable end. I plan to run the siding to a 3/4" or so packing that will be concealed by a wider trim piece. This piece will also cover the end of the siding. I am blind nailing the siding, but I am concerned about the bottom corners lifting over time, thus the wider trim board to cover the ends. Should I also face nail the bottom corners, which again will be covered by the wider trim, or should the wider trim do the trick? I am worried about possibly splitting the Hardie at the bottom corners as well.
