Return air pulling wild

Hello there, I'm looking for knowledge on a return air design I've encountered. The business is a 40'x25' shop built on a slab. It has an 8' ceiling which is ceiling panels, and about 5' of "attic space". The insulation is in the roof spaces. The return air drop is extended just above the ceiling panels in the mechanical room. It pulls "wild" from the attic space and there is one egg crate grille replacing a ceiling tile in the business section which is open to the attic space. The supply also runs in the attic and is uninsulated. I'm confused as to the benefits/downfalls of a return air design like this. Any information on this type of design would be appreciated.
